Minstrel’s Prayer

I don’t know if that is the right title but it was the first that flowed from my fingers as I sat down to write this.  This most definitely is one that I have been thinking about a lot but when it comes down to writing it, I feel there have been zero changes in its content since I first had the idea.  I guess that means it must be from the heart?

Anyway you look at it, music plays a vital role in many of our lives.  There are those songs that just bring back vivid memories like they were yesterday, and some that you can’t remember the specifics but you still have the general idea.

A brief look at my personal history through music:

As Long As You Love Me-The Backstreet Boys

This song reminds me of the talent show at Carden Arbor View School (private elementary school I went to, pretty sure it’s the reason I’m so weird).  Me and 4 friends did a lip sync to it in 5th grade and won first place? Thats not supposed to be a question because we obviously did.  We then performed the same lip sync/dance at the annual golf tournament.  I think that is the closest I’ve been to a celebrity.  I mean until I started writing a blog, then I became an instant celebrity within my own head.

Baby Got Back-Sir Mix A Lot

I know everyone is gonna rip on this one.  But it was the “Bar Mitzvah Song” “Sweet 13th Birthday Party Song” the year I was having my Bar Mitzvah totally rocking 13th birthday party.  On a side not I think it was to this song that this red head that I will never forget’s father was chasing me with a baseball bat.  I could be wrong though.

I Want You Back-Jackson 5

Everyone is mourning the death of MJ right now, and I am sad he died.  I was much inspired by him when I was younger.  Watched his videos for hours to learn how to moon walk.  Don’t ask me to try now.  But when I was in 8th grade, the same group of friends from the afore mentioned song explanation did a dance to this song.  We didn’t win because I am pretty sure my sister beat us.  Damn children siblings!  If I remember correctly I think I got a day suspension from that school.  Girls love bad boys, what can I say.

25 or 6 to 4-Chicago

We must have listened to this song a million times on the way to Brianhead, Utah.  This was before I hated the state (reference here).  But on this road trip was the first time I puked out of a car (recently here).  Little car sick and puked in this old lady’s drive way.  I said sorry bout it though, I think she understood.

Sk8er Boi-Avril Lavinge

This song reminds me of two very very different experiences in my life. The first is a happy memory.  We used to sing this song in JV Swim practice my freshman year of High School.  Everyone hated Chris and I because they were so annoyed but it kept us entertained during kick sets.  When we were trying to get lapped so we didn’t have to work out as much.  Then I beat him in the 50 free, thats right.

The second is when I almost killed myself driving with 3 other people in the car and then got to where we were going and this song was playing too. Holy shit! Probably one of the scariest experiences of my life.

Unholy Confessions-Avenged Sevenfold

High School swim season was painful and this song got me pumped to race.  A teammate introduced me to this song.  I don’t know what it was that attracted me to this song, maybe its rebelliousness?

Stupid Boy-Keith Urban

This song reminds me of my first introduction to country music/the first country song I liked.  My best friend was trying to explain the emotion in this song; I didn’t understand and he finally sent me a Youtube vid and I finally clicked.  Ever since I have appreciated the emotion in country music.

CU Fight Song

The first time I yell this song at the CU vs CSU football game, it give me chills.  Folsom Field is just conducive to a great time.  Also, I am just filled with pride for my school even though ESPN The Magazine thinks we are out of control.  Also it reminds me of standing in front of the stadium trying to raise funds for water polo and cheering the fight song to get money from cougars and gain attention to ourselves.

Pollyanna-Northsar

For all 3 years of my college water polo career we played in the conference finals.  My first year against University of Arizona, you know we played great but didn’t have the endurance.  But we did play with them and could have beaten them if we could practice in a 30m pool too.  The next year we lost to those jerks Utah (God I hate that state) in overtime.  This past year we kicked Utah’s ass in the Conference finals to get our first Conference Championship and National’s bid in 7 years.  This song reminds me of rocking out with Cowboy Clint down I-25 on our way back to Boulder to celebrate.

Sweetest Girl-Wyclef Jean

This is my girlfriend’s song.  It does not need and explanation, since she is the sweetest girl.

Music evokes a lot of emotion for me and brings back memories.  I am probably forgetting a thousand songs and memories.  Songs that go with Pants Down Saturday (actually I think that song is Happy Birthday at Chuey’s in Tuscon?), road trips, summer parties or just good times. I am sorry.  There are tons I am leaving out like CD Mixes I made for people that became soundtracks for the year, ski anthems and other experiences that I don’t have room to include.  Add the ones I forgot and some stories of your own in the comment section.

Love,

Petrie
